The Azores Archipelago are a truly magical chain of islands. On this trip in April 2014 I spent 2 weeks exploring the most easterly and largest island of Sao Miguel. São Miguel is named after Archangel Michael or in Portuguese Saint Michael and is also referred to locally as the “The Green Island”. It is the largest and most populous island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The island covers 760 km2 (290 sq mi) and has around 140,000 inhabitants, with 45,000 of these people resident in the largest city in the archipelago: Ponta Delgado.
